Spirituality 101: Mantras to Start Your Day Off Right
A mantra is traditionally a short sound, word, or phrase spoken in Sanskrit for the purpose of meditation. It is repeated to keep our mind and body focused on the present moment. Since ancient times, mantras have been considered sacred and calming sounds, which is why you’ll often hear the most common “om” used to wind down the end of a yoga class.
However, in today’s world, the term “mantra” has been co-opted to include self-affirming statements that provide us with the strength and confidence to face the world. But the underlying goal remains the same: to focus our intentions and calm our minds. Instead of focusing on traditional Sanskrit mantras, we’ll look at some daily phrases to say in the morning and repeat throughout the day. If you keep these simple mottos in mind, they should help you achieve success and happiness!
“I deserve to feel better”
This mantra gently reminds you that you do, in fact, matter. It can also aid in the promotion of a positive self-image and the reduction of feelings of low self-esteem associated with depression.
This mantra can be repeated at any time. However, it is especially useful when deciding whether to seek the help of a mental health professional for depression diagnosis and treatment.
“I am enough”
This is a reminder that we could all benefit from time to time. It’s human nature to believe we could be better or that there’s always someone better than us — it’s what drives competition and keeps us striving to be better. However, sometimes that pushing manifests as a lack of appreciation for who we are now, resulting in insecurity and self-doubt. When you’re worried about being liked, dealing with insecurity, meeting new people, or starting a new job, use this affirmation. Remind yourself that you are wonderful, just as you are.
“One thing at a time”
When you are overwhelmed by too many things, your life may appear to be spinning out of control. This can result in hazy thinking and an inability to decide what to do next.
Telling yourself to take a step back and focus on one thing at a time can help you organize your thoughts and promote clearer thinking.
This mantra can be helpful during stressful days at work or when you feel like you have too much to do and not enough time to complete it all.
“I Am”
This is the most effective manifestation mantra. Consider this. How do you feel when you say, “I’m sick”? How do you feel when you say, “I am happy?” In meditation, you can use “I am” alone to honor and acknowledge your existence. You can even go so far as to honor and acknowledge your divinity and oneness with all that is.
You can also use positive affirmations while meditating to help you visualize what you want out of life. “I am a successful (whatever you want to be),” for example.
