5 Ways to Cheer Up No Matter How Bad Your Day Is Going
No matter how positive we are, or how hard we try, there are going to be some days that we feel that the world is against us. Nothing is going our way, and we dream about heading straight home and flopping into our bed and wait for tomorrow to come.
Who knows what started it; maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or maybe your morning coffee didn’t perk you up as much. However, one thing is for sure though, you need to snap out of it as soon as possible. The health experts recommend these tips and tricks on how to cheer yourself up.
Take a Brisk Walk
As a lot of people already know, when we exercise, our body releases endorphins that will boost our mood, and have us feeling good. However, we don’t really need to work out for an hour in order to reap these benefits, according to Jessica Griffin, Ph.D., psychiatry and pediatrics associate professor of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Just having a 15-minute brisk walk is enough to lift up our moods and release the endorphin hormones in our body
Take a Deep Breath (or three, or six)
Breathing exercises are one of the more effective means of releasing stress, especially if you find yourself in a situation where you cannot stand up and walk it off. According to Chiti Parikh, M.D., the Integrative Health and Wellbeing program co-director at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian, you should visualize the air going in your belly as you inhale, and then hold it for a few seconds. After that, breathe it out through your nose. Breath in for four counts, hold it for two counts and then exhale for four counts too.
Keep Reminding Yourself That It’s Only Temporary
Sometimes when we’re in a foul mood, time really seems to drag on. We don’t really notice that time is actually going on at the same rate because we’re focused so much on how incensed we feel. A minute seems to take forever to pass by no matter what we do.
Whenever we’re in a bad mood, most would simply just want the day to end. But the health experts recommend changing our mindset into thinking whatever unpleasant feelings we’re experiencing“ is only temporary.” Keep reminding yourself that your mood, no matter how bad it may seem, will not last forever. By keeping this in mind, you will slowly, but surely, start to feel better.
Try to Smile More, but at Your Own Terms
We all know how difficult it is to smile, especially when we’re in a bad mood. We know that the person telling us to smile has good intentions. But more often than not, we don’t care. We don’t really feel like smiling, so why should we?
Well, if you want to feel better, you should, or at least that’s what Christine Carter, Ph.D. says. Dr. Carter is the author of the book, The Sweet Spot: How to Find Your Groove at Home and Work. Apparently, it is scientifically proven that smiling at somebody every once in a while, will make you feel happier.
Stand with Proper Posture
Remember when the experts said you should take a breather, and walk it out when you are in a bad mood? On that walk, try to stand up straight. According to a recent study, happier people tend to stand up straighter, and this might help you get over your bad mood.
According to Dr. Carter., we should pay attention to our posture, as sitting or standing up straight can lead to more confidence, which is also a form of happiness. So whenever you feel down, try to straighten up, and maybe you might feel just a bit better.
