Matcha’s Fascinating Benefits We Bet You Had No Idea They Existed
Millions of tea lovers won’t be able to give you the exact reason behind their love for sipping tea. Several people say they enjoy having tea so much that they don’t need a reason for it; they simply choose to call it “celebration of the day.”
Now, you must be aware that there are various types of tea available in the market. But quite interestingly, the one kind that’s currently catching the attention of the world is Matcha. In fact, the beverage has become so much of a craze that several coffee addicts have altered their preferences and started sipping Matcha.
We’re sure you’re as curious as us to know why. Well, let’s find out!
What exactly is Matcha?
Matcha is a processed variant of green tea that is available in a fine powdered form. It originated in the Japanese culture many centuries ago and is currently grown in several places in Asia. The best Matcha comes from southern Japan. You’d be surprised to know that Matcha isn’t restricted to beverage serving; instead, it is incorporated in many cuisines and dishes as an essential ingredient.

Types of Matcha
Macha is served in two ways – Usucha and Koicha. Usucha is the thinner form in which the tea powder is first sifted and then whisked with hot water quickly until frothy. However, Koicha is prepared by gently kneading the tea powder using a bamboo whisk resulting in a thick, paint-like texture. Koicha is made from the highest quality Matcha powder, but Usucha is the second-highest grade Matcha tea.
How is Matcha produced?
Although all kinds of tea are produced from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis, every variant receives different treatment, bringing a difference in the production of the various kinds. To prepare Matcha, experts cover the bushes with shade cloths at least 20 days before harvesting. This technique enhances the distinct flavor and increases the production of L-Theanine (an amino acid). This amino acid crops up in the plant naturally and is restricted to the leaves.
While harvesting, the best buds are picked by experts, and leaves are laid out to dry; these dried leaves are known as Tencha. Tencha leaves are then de-veined, de-stemmed, and milled to produce Macha.
Heath benefits of Matcha
Matcha is packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants known as polyphenols. Polyphenols protect the body against cancer and heart disease. They also regulate blood sugar levels and blood pressure while boosting anti-aging and metabolism.
Unlike traditional green tea, there are no leaves to be discarded in the case of Matcha. Instead, the entire leaves are consumed in the grounded form with water, and that results in exceptional health benefits.
To summarize
Due to its visual appeal and distinct umami flavor, Matcha has become the darling of the tea world. Even in skincare and beauty, it is making waves. But since L-Theanine amino acid and caffeine are its prominent contents, it should be enjoyed in moderation.
