Caterina Scorsone’s Perspective on Motherhood Changed Following Her Daughter’s Down Syndrome Diagnosis
For the longest time, Caterina Scorsone biggest wish had been to have a happy, healthy family, but little did she know that somewhere along her motherhood journey, her entire world would turn upside down.
In a heart-wrenching interview, the renowned Grey’s Anatomy actress Caterina Scorsone revealed how her perspective on motherhood changed after her daughter was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
Let us uncover how the actress and her family are coming to terms with this news and how it made her stronger to fight for her daughters’ wellbeing.
The Initial Thought
In a Motherly podcast interview last Thursday, the renowned actress Caterina Scorsone revealed that her outlook on motherhood completely changed when she learned that her second daughter had Down Syndrome.
Before that, motherhood had been more like a job to Caterina, whose most important goal was to give her children the best upbringing she possibly could.
When her first child Eliza came into the world, Caterina swore that she’d equip her with as many skills and lessons to survive in the competitive society. She admired her eldest daughter’s external qualities such as her beauty and wit, thinking that without them, she’d probably not be able to keep up with the fast-paced world.
The Realization
However, it all changes when she discovered her younger daughter, Paloma Michaela, had Down Syndrome. Caterina revealed how she panicked when she learned of Paloma’s condition.
All of a sudden, she didn’t know what to do or how to care for a disordered child. Caterina felt guilty because the actress was supposed to keep her daughter safe and make her feel loved.
Caterina didn’t know much about the genetic disorder apart from the fact that kids who have it are different and have special needs.
Caterina was afraid that Paloma wouldn’t grow up to be as clever and funny as Eliza, but then she realized how flawed her concept of motherhood really was.
Paloma didn’t just prove to be as smart as her older sister, but she also had her own unique set of quirks that set her apart from the rest.
The New Journey
Since giving birth to Paloma, Caterina’s outlook on motherhood has completely changed. She started looking at her daughters as wonderful blessings she’ll treasure and protect forever.
She stopped comparing her young girls to each other, or to other kids, and chose to love them regardless of their qualities. Most of all, Caterina started giving special attention to her daughter Paloma.
Caterina says she loves and cares for Paloma just like she does for her older daughter. Despite her slow cognitive and physical growth due to the genetic disorder, she is extremely proud of Paloma and knows that she’ll accomplish great things when she grows up.
Caterina gives her the attention, love, and care she deserves, but most of all, the Grey’s Anatomy actress says she’s patient when it comes to teaching her new things. After all, Paloma has also taught Caterina so much about motherhood.
The Unbreakable Bond
Caterina says she’s happy that her two daughters are getting along well. The actress says Eliza has been nothing but understanding and supportive towards Paloma. The elder daughter has been incredibly protective of her sister.
She even said Paloma is going to be a baby for a little bit longer, and Caterina would smile in delight when her younger daughter giggled in response. It makes it easier for all of them to help Paloma understand and accept her condition, all the while providing her the support she needs.
